I stopped at the Espresso Bar in Browning, MT, which is seen in the background, and this long-haired, bearded hippie with an earring approaches me and starts yammering about classic Honda Goldwings. It could only have been Schiffner; Browning isn't that big a place.

Notes: The Salamander is the ice shelf left of center. It used to be part of Grinnell Glacier, which is hidden below it.

Individual glaciers in Glacier National Park are now relatively small by global standards. Only five glaciers (Blackfoot, Jackson, Harrison, Agassiz, and Rainbow Glaciers) remain in a range of 1.0 - 1.5 sq km, with Sperry and Grinnell Glaciers having shrunk slightly below that to about 0.9 sq km each. An additional five glaciers are currently within 0.5 - 0.8 sq km (Kintla, Weasel Collar, Chaney, Ahern, and Pumpelly Glaciers). Yet, on a regional scale, if one looks beyond the Park, perennial ice and snow of any size is notably scarce. Very few glacierets exist for more than 100 km north in Canada, and none approach the 0.1 sq km minimum glacier size. To the south and west, only 9 glaciers are recognized from mountain ranges within 160 km of the Park (Dyson, 1952). Stanton and Grant Glaciers, are nearest the Park and the largest, currently at approximately 0.37 sq km and 0.34 sq km, respectively. Thus, the complex of glaciers within the Park stands out as an isolated grouping; the greatest assemblage of alpine glaciers in Montana, and when compared to historical distributions, a prime example of glacier recession occurring throughout the Rocky Mountains.

Notes: About 75 million years ago a vast expanse of rock some 60 miles (100 km) west of here cracked, lifted, and began to slide east. By the time this thrust block stopped traveling it had become the mountains of today's [Waterton-Glacier]International Peace Park.

The red and green argilites and pale limestones of the Lewis Overthrust are ancient rock. They began as mud and sediments 1.5 billion years ago in Precambrian oceans. Normally, older rock will lie beneath younger rock. However, here, the Lewis Overthrust forced ancient Precambrian rock over the top of Cretaceous rocks that are just 75 million years old.

Notes: The glaciers of Glacier National Park appear to be excellent barometers of climate change. For instance, there was a drastic rate of glacial retreat during the period from 1920-1940 when this region had above average summer temperatures and below average annual precipitation. From 1960-1979, several of the larger glaciers advanced very slightly during a period of greater precipitation and lower temperatures. Thus, long-term reductions in glacier size reflect long-term increases in average temperature and/or reductions in winter snow.

Notes: Going to the Sun Road is 52 miles long between its junction with US 89 in St Mary, MT, (elev. 4,560 ft) and its junction with US 2 in West Glacier, MT, (elev. 3,154 ft) near Apgar, MT. Visitors' centers are located in those places and at Logan Pass (elev. 6,646 ft).

The "Big Drift," a wall of snow and ice heaped by winds onto the eastern flanks of Logan Pass, tops out at about 80 feet, burying the Going-to-the-Sun Road for most of the year. The earliest date snowplows were able to push the winter's weight off the alpine section of the road was May 16, 1987. The latest date was June 23, both in 1991 and 1995. Snows generally reclaim the highway by Halloween.

In 1911, only 4,000 visitors came through Glacier National Park's gates. A decade later, in 1920, visitation had grown to 22,500. Most of those people arrived by train, and then traveled Glacier's backcountry in a saddle. At their peak, the park's stables housed 1,000 horses and served 10,000 tourists per year.

By the 1930s, horses had given way to cars, and the explosion of tourists exploring America by automobile resulted in a similar explosion in national park visits.

In 1933, the year before the Going-to-the-Sun Road officially opened, about 76,000 people visited Glacier. Just one year later, with the road advertised as ready for motorists, 116,965 visitors drove 40,000 cars to the park. Today, nearly 2 million people drive 500,000 cars over the Sun Road every year.

Notes: The immense Douglas fir timbers, which support the lodge, are monarchs of the forest, probably five to eight hundred years old when they were cut. They are the reason it is referred to as "The Big Tree Lodge." When the lodge was being constructed, the Indians were astonished at them. They called the lodge "Omahkoyis" which means "Big Lodge."
